Hanuman

In this painting Hanuman, also known as Anjaneya, the son of Anjana is shown paying respect to both Shri Ram and Tulsidas. Only the back side of the photo of Shri Rama is seen in the painting. The artist has very beautifully mirrored the presence of Bhakti giving him more importance than the God himself. Nothing in the world is permanent yet hermit Hanuman is chiranjivi (immortal) but householder Ram is destined to die. The artist points out that all possibilities exist in Hindu mythology. Yama, the Hindu god of death fears no one but Hanuman, and so he is the most popular guardian god of the Hindu pantheon. . Hanuman serves Ram unconditionally; he has no interest in material gain but he does gain a lot emotionally . Hanuman though he is a vanar jati but is of Brahaman varna. Hanuman has outgrown the animal instinct to dominate and be territorial . He is able to satisfy others without his need of being satisfied. The artist has imagined Tulsidas as a young man with sharp feature and with partially shaven head with knot tied in the back of his head with the rest of the hair. The artist has painted him with wave like curved eyebrows, fish shaped eyes, sharp thin nose, cupid lips, strong chin and angular profile. The entrance of the house has a decoration of a newly inaugurated home with banana tree and Kalash with green raw coconut. The artist, through this griha pravaeh, is reminding the viewer of Tulsi Das’s griha pravesh after he left Chitrakoot and went to settle in Ayodhya, the birth place of Ram in the hope of getting a vision of God. In one corner two metal trunk is kept one above other with a earthen pot covered with a earthen bowl and a metal plate with heap of ladoos partially covered with a piece of cloth. One rat is eating away the Prasad. Tulsidas is so engrossed in reading doha from “Bal Khand” of Ramayana that he couldn’t detect the disturbance made by the rat. Tulsi Das spent long time in tapasya and his desire to see Shri Ram became more and more intense. One day it suddenly flashed in his mind that Hanuman would be his perfect guru. He realized that Anjaneya’s grace was essential to see Ram. Though this painting the artist has expressed this thought of Tulsi Das and shown how one devotee helps the other. Anjaneya and Tulsidas, as we all know, are Bhakt yogis. They are tied to Shri Rama with love and devotion. So Tulsi Das decided first to meet Hanuman, the greatest devotee of Shri Ram as only he could help him. There is an emotional delight in always being with God, Shri Rama. Tulsidas, through ‘Bal Khand’ of Ramayana is imparting the knowledge that before a soul acquires human body, it takes birth in this world eighty four lakh times in different life form like insects and animals living in water, land animals and flying animals like birds. Our consciousness is unused or left sleeping and we fail to acquire any knowledge of super consciousness Shri Rama. Even Mahatma Gandhi had a special liking for Tulsidas’s Ramayana. Tulsidas, to throw light and show a more direct connection with the limitless inner resources and the ever-present power of God through his teachings in Vrindavan, made his followers see Shri Rama’s form in Lord Krishna’s idol. At Rameshwaram, he made Lord Shiva appear before him through his extreme devotion to bring followers of Vishnu and Shiva closer.
