Ghodha (Horse)

This is the twentieth painting of the series. The artist has painted a common old man with absolute and unquestioning faith in Shri Rama, whose sole aim is to spread the teaching and message of his lord. He is travelling in a horse. They are both tired and so are resting under a big shady tree. The devotee of Shri Rama took care to rest in a place where there is plenty of grass and water for the horse because horses do not prefer having leaves. The man is well built with grey hair and ribbon moustache. Though he is very tired, still his face has an expression of happiness and satisfaction. He has thick eyebrows and light colour eye. He has a recessed chin and shinny lips. The garment of the man mirrors the weather condition of the place to be cold as he is shown wearing a red sweater. He is wearing a white doshala and a white dhoti. He is holding a stick and wearing a nagra shoe. Rama naam is written on the jean kept on the back of the horse and the saddle is kept on the side of the devotee. The horse is of dark colour with well built flank and strong legs. The mane of the horse is of dull white colour and dark tail. The animal is representing life and its motion. The religious preacher though once swift, strong and full of strength has now become weak and slow. The horse has a very significant role in Ramayana. The preacher is symbolic of the king’s charioteer Sumantra who drove the brother, daughter in-law and the would be King to the forest so that they can spend fourteen years as a hermit. He has been part of all the happy moments of Ayodhya’s history. In his younger days many a time he had driven king Dashrath to hunt in the forest. He had brought the victorious king from war amid cheering crowd. With passage of time he remembers four small prince enjoying while going through the city in his chariot. He is not able to come to terms with the decision of three major person of Raghu kul (clan) going to forest. In a moment his life has collapsed. He had stopped the chariot as it reached the banks of Ganga where Ram along with Lakshman and Sita got down. Sumantra watched them going up to the river and talk to Guha to ferry them across the river. Though no eclipse lasts forever but fourteen years is too much for an old man. The tree under which the religious preacher is sitting has a very broad trunk and attractive dark green and red leaves. They are resting on a plain grass land. The blue colour and the reddish-orange rays of the sun mix with each other in the evening sky.
