Ramghat

This is the twelfth painting of the series. The painting is of Ramghat in Ayodhya on the banks of river Sarayu, a tributary of Ganga. An old aged sadhu, satisfied and happy is returning from the river after taking a dip in the water. He is feeling the bliss of Shri Ram. He is sure that his bathing in Ramghat will ensure a happy and a trouble free life and will be free from the cycle of rebirth. The sadhu has milk white hair white moustaches and beard. He is wearing a white dhoti and carrying his luggage in a piece of old red cloth. He is an old man with protruding belly and is walking with a support of a walking stick. The artist has painted a white squirrel in the tree which represents Shri Ram. The tree is like the life of the aged sadhu; very old with many branches but with no leaves. In the same way the sadhu has a long extended family but now he has left all attachment and is on the way to seek dharma and moksha. “In the spiritual life one becomes just like a little child-without resentment, without attachment, full of life and joy’’. There is a harmonious blending of red and blue in sky. The colours seem to flow into one another. The whole painting has a hue of blue. There is another small tree on the other side of the stair with beautiful white flowers. It is an offspring of the old tree, which is growing and expanding. In the same way the generation of the sadhu is flourishing and expanding. The squirrel, though a small animal, has the blessings of Shri Ram for its special courage and endeavor to help in carrying the work of construction of the bridge. The squirrel would jump into the water and then roll on the sand so that the grains stuck to its fur. He would then run up the bridge and shake off the sand grains, thus contributing to the bridge-building effort. As a sign of encouragement and appreciation, lord Ram ran his fingers on the squirrel’s back, thus creating its stripes. A pair of swan is swimming in the river in blue waters. They are the symbols of genuine and pure love and faithful relation; they reflect a complete harmony between them in mind and soul. They are showing the perfect understanding and divine unity between Shri Ram and Sita.
