Waiting

This painting is of a district of West Bengal titled Shrirampur. The name is reminder of Shri Rama. The man waiting signifies prince Bharat waiting for the arrival of Shri Rama and Sita for fourteen years. There is a kind of spiritual fervour and a spontaneous symbolism in this painting. The shop near where the man is waiting is a shoe shop and two trees on each side of the shop. The name of the shop is written in Bengali; Shrichoronersu that means ‘adoring your feet’. It is like reflection of prince Bharat’s thought. Everyone is waiting to hear the footstep of Shri Ram. Under the name, the address of the shop is written as 14 Shrirampur in both the languages Hindi and Bengali. In between the address a kharau is shown, though the use of kharau has stopped a century ago. An important thing to notice is that with the name of the shop ‘Shrichoronersu’ latest type of shoes are painted. Kharau is a representation of Shri Ram as it was for prince Bharat so it is for all. The numerical number 14 is in the memory of the years spent by prince Bharat in waiting for his brother Shri Rama. For symbolizing the wait the artist has also shown a small red letter box behind the shop. The first ray of sunlight is reflecting on the face of the man. He smile shows that he is contended and has a happy look on his face. The man is a seller of petty things. He is carrying his things in a basket and has tied properly folded old cloth in his head so that it becomes easier for him to carry. The man is waiting for cocks to call and the day to begin so that he could go to work. The artist has painted him with three-fourth face, small hair with thin but long tilak. He has a prominent cheek, very intense looking eyes, well kept mustache and slightly cliff chin. The man is wearing plain white dhoti and small kurta. The seller has casually kept one hand above another and in the same way he has kept one foot above another. The man who has swept the floor has not yet carried away the residue and the broom is kept there. In this painting everyone and everything is waiting for the moment when ‘things would happen’. One white cock and a hen are searching for eatables from the residue.
