Rangrez

In this painting a Muslim printer is transforming ordinary chadar (scarf) into a special one by printing Ram naam on it. Though a Muslim he is devotee of Shri Rama like the Mewati Jogis of Rajasthan. He is a middle aged common working man. He is dedicated artisan and his profession is to block print Rama naam on cloths. He is a true Karma yogi, for him work is worship. Whoever spends too much time in meditation becomes lazy and the person who spends too much time and thought in physical activity becomes too much worldly and looses contact with God. A person who can combine work and at the same time keep a harmonious relation with Shri Rama is in true sense a devotee of Shri Rama and a pious man. A square bowl of red colour is kept on his right side, he has chosen red colour for making his print. A metal small pot with a spout is kept near him for drinking water. He had tied a rope between two trees to hang his printed material to dry. He is wearing a cap, a spectacle, a locket in a black string in his neck and a pearl ring in his small finger of right hand. He is wearing white stitched garment and a checked lungi. He has a thin profile with dark eyebrows, thin sharp nose and protruding lips. This confirms the artist’s excellence in the study of unique traits and characteristic features of human beings. The painting is depicting a sense of beauty and peace with the presence of dancing peacock and rain filled cloud. The dancing peacock indicates a shower from clouds very soon. Behind the clouds a bright light is shining as if creating powerful lightning. The Mewati bard sings a song according to which, due to Lakshman, once Shiva and Rama had a fight over Hanuman. The dash of light in the middle of cloulds is symbolic to that war. The peacock is symbolic of the warlord son of Shiva – Kartikaya. He is there to help his father. Among many flat laying oval shaped colourful rocks, there is a linga shape black shining rock near the peacock. It symbolizes Shiva’s presence and the man with utmost faith symbolizes Rama’s presence. The painting has a purple hue. The circular clouds have mesmerizing tones of violet, the sky and the peacock is of ink blue colour.
