This painting is dedicated to Rishi Marich, who to attract Sita, disguised himself as a golden dear. Rishi Marich was a devotee of Shri Rama and relative of Ravana. King Ravana threatened to kill the Rishi Marich in case he disobeyed him. Rishi Marich preferred to die in the hands of Shri Rama than of king Ravana. Rishi Marich while dying begged to Shri Rama for forgiveness. In the painting another devotee of Shri Rama is carefully and lovely caring a dear in his arms. The man has strong affection for the dear; the animal also seems to be very comfortable and habituated in being carried in his arms. The dear is representing Rishi Marich in the painting. It is a unique example of a blend of great emotion with simplicity which defines a life of a hermit. This devotee has a turban around his head and the specialty of the cloth of the turban is that Ram is printed all over it. The artist has painted lovely flowering plant like lily and a small bush full of green berries and cactuses in the forest. The philosophy behind these different kinds of foliage is that life will give us many kind of experiences, some sweet like honey of the flower , some not so sweet like unripe fruits and some sour like the cactus. With help of Shri Ram experiences of life will be enduring and peaceful. The sadhu has a calm face and bow shaped eyebrow. His beard and mustache are of long Van dyke style which is tied under the chin. Hairs are wavy and kept in unruly manner. The gentle movement of the head of the sadhu is exceptionally attractive and tender. He is wearing a doshala (long scarf) to cover himself. He is also wearing two strings of tulsi beads in his neck. The nature in the background is picturesque with setting sun with red and yellow sky. There is a grey colour tree with new red leaves in the top. Different tones of red are creating a mesmerizing effect on the viewers. The painting is simple but balanced and intense in composition.
